Being Thankful for Blessings in Disguise.

Over the last number of weeks I have been going through a book study with a group of women from my church called "One Thousand Gifts, A Dare to Live Fully Right Where you are" by Ann Voskamp. I have to admit that when I first heard about this book I wasn't all that interested. But after the first session I was completely drawn into this eye opening study on the power of gratitude in any and every matter how awful or how wonderful.

It's easy to be thankful for good things in our lives but what about that difficult child or that tragedy that just hit? Furthermore, why would we even want to be thankful for things that bring us hardship and pain?

As I look over the past number of years of my life I realize that my Greatest Blessings have come from some of the darkest times of my life. Blessings in Disguise I call them...What about you? What about your life?

The Healthy Alternative to Baby Rice Cereal.

With my first 3 babies I kinda just went with the flow and trusted what mainstream doctors and media suggested they eat. But over the last several years I have learned a lot and taken on more personal responsibility for the health of myself and my family. I don't do things perfectly, that's for sure, but I do try.

So with the birth of our latest lil one I decided to do a bit of research into what foods really are best for babies to start on. Turns out their needs are pretty much the same as ours. Once their digestive system is mature, at around 6 months, it's ready. The only thing to really be concerned with is honey before the age of 1 and egg whites. It used to be that doctors would recommend staying away from foods that many people are allergic to such as peanuts but now they are realizing that introducing these foods at an early age actually helps the body become accustomed to them and lowers the risk of food allergies later in life.

Black Bean Taco Soup

Black Bean Taco Soup 
Serves 12 

  • 1 pound LEAN Ground Beef 
  • 2 stalks Celery, chopped 
  • 1 large Onion, chopped 
  • 3 tsp minced Garlic 
  • 3 large Carrots, chopped 
  • 2 19 ounce cans Black beans, rinsed and drained 
  • 1 28 ounce can Diced Tomatoes 
  • 1 Tbs Organic Ground Cumin 
  • 1 tsp Salt (Optional) 
  • 3/4 cup Salsa. (Mild, medium or hot depending on your taste.) 
  • 6 cups Water 
  • 1 sliced or diced Avocado (Optional) 
  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt--Plain, low or not fat. (Optional)

Coconut Coffee, My New Morning Addiction.

There is a ton of info out there about the Health Benefits of Coconut Oil. It's highly nutritious and delicious and when blended into a cup of coffee it adds a rich & creamy froth that will spoil you from having your morning cup of java any other way!

Get Pure Rest with Dr. Oz Guide to Better Sleep

On the October 8th, 2015 episode of The Dr. Oz Show, Dr. Michael Breus and Dr. Oz revealed a Guide to Better Sleep. Watch the video for all the details but here are the basic points:

  • Keep a "Worry Watch Journal -- write down your worries and see how many actually come to fruition.
  • Turn out the Lights  -- when you’re exposed to light at night, even from light bulbs and computer screens, you can suppress melatonin, which tricks your body clock into thinking it’s too early for bed.
  • Set a Regular bedtime Alarm -- Set your alarm clock for an hour before you need to be in bed to remind you to start winding down
  • Turn off your devices -- Don’t check e-mail or get on the computer before bed. If you like to read in bed, replace the bulb in your reading lamp with something like the LED Good Night bulb.
  • Take a Melatonin Supplement -- If you’ve been up late for a few nights in a row and you’re having trouble getting back to normal sleep, Dr. Michael Breus recommends a melatonin supplement like USANA’s Pure Rest™.
