Lyle MacWilliam on The Dr. Oz Show & Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements

On today's episode of the Dr. Oz Show, Author, educator and biochemist, Lyle MacWilliam, spoke about his book, The Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements. In an earlier post I highlighted the top rated supplement according to this guide.  Here is a Quick overview of the segment, incase you missed it!

Dr. Oz's Top 3 Reason's why to Take a Daily Nutritional Supplement
  • Poor Diet - Most people don't eat enough of the healthy foods like fruits & Vegetable that we should.
  • Overcooking Foods - We loose Nutrients & Destroy them through the cooking process.
  • Age - our metabolic rate and body process's change as we get older.
The Question was Asked by a viewer: How much is too much when it comes to taking nutritional supplements.

Lyle MacWilliam replied, "It's Not a Question of how much or how many, but of how they are manufactured and a question of knowing what to look out for...There are a few Nutrients that can be problematic"

2 Problematic Nutrients to watch out for in a MultiVitamin:
  • Preform Vitamin A - 5000IU of vitamin A/day in the first trimester of pregnancy can cause birth defects.
  • Iron - A lot of products are high in Iron. Many people absorb too much iron from their diet. Combine that with a supplement that has a high amount of Iron and Vitamin C, which enhances the absorption of iron and you can run into health problems.
Lyle MacWilliam went on to explain how exactly he evaluated over 1500 multi-vitamin supplements in North America to provide an unbiased guide for consumers. In Essence, he used a combined published opinion of 12 Nutritional Experts as well as 18 different health support criteria.

18 Health Support Criteria that we used in the Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements:
  • Completeness
  • Potency
  • Mineral Forms
  • Vitamin E Forms
  • Immune Support
  • Antioxidant Support
  • Bone Health
  • Heart Health
  • Liver Health (detoxification)
  • Metabolic Health (glucose control)
  • Ocular Health
  • Methylation Support
  •  Lipotropic Factors
  • Inflammation Control
  • Glycation Control
  • Bioflavonoid Profile
  • Phenolic Compounds Profile
  • Potential Toxicities
Each supplement was then rated between 0 to 5 Stars. The companies that received 5 stars were asked to prove that what was on their label actually was in the bottle, by having their product Independently tested and approved to be Pharmaceutical Grade.

MacWilliam highlighted that many well known companies who you would expect to have a high rating did not do so well.

In the end, Dr. Oz straight out asked Lyle MacWilliam..."who got the top rating? Who's the best?"

The answer? Trusted Partner & Sponsor, of the Dr. Oz Show, USANA Health Sciences.

USANA's 5 Star Gold Metal rating in the Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements is impressive in an industry that is highly unregulated and infamous for selling "natural" supplements with hazardous ingredients. My family and I have been taking their supplements, ever since we discovered them over 7 years ago and can attest to that fact that they are simply amazing. This is why I am proud to recommend products formulated & manufactured by USANA Health Sciences.
